Ingredients:
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 1/2 cup (60g) powdered sugar
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp (1.5g) salt
- 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp (30ml) whole milk or heavy cream
- 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
- Green gel food coloring
Instructions:
- Combine the softened butter and powdered sugar in a bowl. Stir until just combined; do not over whip the butter. Note: Over whipping introduces too much air, causing spread.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
- Gradually fold in the flour using a spatula until a soft, non sticky dough forms. Stop mixing the moment the flour streaks disappear.
- Form the dough into a flat disc, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).
- Roll the chilled dough onto a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 1/4 inch (6mm).
- Press Christmas tree cutter firmly into the dough and transfer shapes to a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are barely golden and centers are set. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
- Whisk icing ingredients together until smooth. Divide into two bowls: one white and one dyed deep green.
- Pipe a thick line of green icing down the center of the tree and add small white dots for ornaments.
