Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp (10g) baking powder
  • 1 tsp (5g) salt
  • 1 tbsp (12ml) vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp (16g) cornstarch
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) heavy cream
  • 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract
  • 2ml green gel food coloring
  • 1 yellow star-shaped candy
  • 1/4 cup (30g) multicolored nonpareil sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is pale and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  3. Sift in the flour, baking powder, salt, and cornstarch. Mix on low until a soft dough forms.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 60 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Roll the chilled dough to 1/4 inch (6mm) thickness.
  7. Cut out an equal number of stars using different-sized cutters (e.g., 4 large, 4 medium, 4 small).
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are barely golden, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Mix powdered sugar, cream, vanilla, and green coloring until the icing is thick and holds a peak.
  10. Stack the cookies from largest to smallest, applying a dollop of royal icing between layers and rotating each layer 45 degrees.
  11. Top with a yellow star candy and decorate with nonpareil sprinkles.
